Lambing at Butser
With the ‘Beast from the East’ now a distant memory, some of the Sweet Dreamers team spent a sunny Spring filled morning at Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire, meeting some of their newest arrivals. Here’s what we got up to...
After an eventful arrival, with successfully freeing our car from wheel spinning in the wet mud, we were greeted with the most picturesque countryside views. With our wellies on and our camera at the ready, we knew we were in for a fun morning.
On our way to the reception centre, we were welcomed by a protective and stern looking Ram, who we later learned is named Norman, and his fluffy flock. Butser Ancient Farm is not just any farm, it is also a unique experimental archaeology site. You can see on your arrival the archaeological reconstructions of ancient buildings from the Stone Age, Iron Age, Roman Britain and the Anglo-Saxon period. Butser also grow crops from prehistory and keep rare breeds of animals, including pigs, goats and sheep (our faves).
We met up with Butser team member Rachel, who then introduced us to super cute Basil the Lamb. Basil was a one week old Jacob lamb and is being looked after by the staff at Butser. Being one of the more tamer lambs, we were able to take some pictures with him and our very own flock of sheep. We also got to have a little hold. As with all babies Basil needed to be fed and he popped back to the office with Rachel to have some brunch.
We then had a little wander and popped into the ancient buildings to take in some of the history. We were not the only ones enjoying the farm, there were many local school trips visiting, being educated in all that Butser has to offer. Finally, before tearing ourselves away from the fabulous farm to return to the office, we made our way up to one of the fields to meet more of the super cute lambs. Some of them were born that very morning and were already up and bouncing around. Still staying quite close to mum, we managed to take some more lovely photos of the lambs in the fields.
Overall we had a fantastic time at Butser and all agreed that meeting Basil was our highlight! We’d like to thank the Butser team for being so welcoming and for helping us make the most of our visit.
